James Hamilton was the son of John Hamilton. He was born about 1897 in Duneane, midway between Toome and Randalstown. He enlisted in Lisburn. Corporal James Hamilton was serving with the 11th Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles when he was killed in action in Flanders on Friday 10th August 1917. He was 20 years old.

The 1911 has a possible listing of James as age 14, living with the Cameron family at house 20 in Ballymatoskerty, Toome, County Antrim. He was still at school.

From the Ballymena Observer dated 24th August 1917:
The relatives of L/Cpl James Hamilton. Royal Irish Rifles of Ballymatoskerty, Toomebridge, have been informed that he was killed in action on 12th August, 1917.
Corporal Hamilton has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres.
