While at home in Port Glasgow, Gunner John Clenaghan died of influenza on 3rd July 1918. He died at 5.00 am. His brother was married at 10.00 am.
Gunner Clenaghan was buried in Port Glasgow Cemetery. A military funeral was provided by the Royal Garrison Artillery from Fort Matilda, Glasgow.
John Clenaghans’s brother, William Clenaghan, born 1881, also served. He died on 29th Jan 1916 in France.
John's wife Mary, it seems, moved back to Portglenone after his death. Mary was awarded a regular pension and 40/- for September 1918 for herself and 7 children. No medals awarded due to John not serving overseas.
Gunner John Clenaghan is also commemorated on the War Memorial in Port Glasgow.
