John Clenaghan was born Coatbridge, Scotland about 1883. John worked as a coal man. He married Mary Duffy in Port Glasgow. Mary came from Portglenone. John and Mary had seven children. John Clenaghan enlisted in Port Glasgow. Gunner John Clenaghan was granted special leave to return home. His child had been run over and was seriously injured. While at home in Port Glasgow, Gunner John Clenaghan died of influenza on 3rd July 1918. His wife Mary, it seems, moved back to Portglenone after his death.
