Medal card
The Ballymena Observer, dated 7th May 1915, printed a four page supplement which listed all those serving with the forces. Hugh O'Hare, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, was listed as being from Carmegrim. Carmegrim lies south east of Portglenone in County Antrim.
Private Hugh O’Hare was serving with the 1st Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers when he was killed in action on the 1st day of the Battle of the Somme on Saturday 1st July 1916. He was 30 years old.
Private Hugh O’Hare has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916.
