George Gribbon was born in Dalzell, Motherwell, Lanark about 1895. The 1911 census lists a 16 year old George Gribbon, working as a servant for the Wilson family in Ballydugennan, south east of Toome. Other newspaper reports suggest George Gribbon also lived in the Brecart, just east of Toome. George enlisted in Hamilton, Scotland. Private George Gribbon was serving with the 1st Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was killed in action in France & Flanders on 31st January 1917.

The Thiepval Memorial will be found on the D73, next to the village of Thiepval, off the main Bapaume to Albert road (D929). Each year a major ceremony is held at the memorial on 1 July.
