Summary
Patrick Conway was the son of Andrew and Kate Conway. Patrick Conway was born on 21st May 1893 in Draperstown, County Londonderry. Both his father and grandfather were tailors. At the outbreak of war Patrick Conway enlisted in Tipperary, being at first attached to the Irish Brigade with which he served at the front for several months. Lance Corporal Patrick Conway was serving with the 6th Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment when he was killed in action on Monday 23rd October 1916. He was 23 years old. Lance Corporal Patrick Conway has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate in Ypres.
Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.
