While in the field with the Manchester Regiment, he was admitted to hospital on 3rd September 1916. He rejoined his unit at the end of September. In March 1917 he contracted malaria. He rejoined his unit on 4th April. |

On 3rd September 1917, he once again contracted malaria and was admitted to hospital in Corfu. His health remained poor and it was not until 5th August 1918 that he returned to Salonika. He joined the 11th Battalion of the Welsh Regiment on 7th September 1918. |
