He left home eight years ago for New Zealand, and volunteered at the opening of the war, A friend writing home about him says:-‘He was believed to be the biggest man in the whole New Zealand force, and he came in for considerable attention as the transport was about to weigh anchor. His last words to his friends in New Zealand as the ship sailed were ‘We’ll all meet on the Folly Brae’, a fondly remembered hill here at home, which alas, he was not fated to see again.
