The 1901 census lists Samuel as lodging with his brother at house 56 in Beechfield Street, Belfast. Samuel was a grocer. His brother was a clerk.
The 1911 census does not list Samuel as living with the family at house 25 in London Street, Ormeau, Belfast.
The 1911 English census lists Samuel Wilson Lilley as age 34, living at 49 Wingrove Gardens, Fenham, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in Northumberland. He was married about 1905 to Mary Ellen. They had two children. Samuel worked as a grocery assistant.

Private Samuel Lilley served in initially with the Northumberland Fusiliers, Service No. 7348.
Lance-Corporal Samuel Wilson Lilley was serving with the 2nd Battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment when he was killed in action on 29th September 1918, aged 41.
Samuel’s younger brother, Private William Lilley, also died in the war. William was serving with the 110th Field Ambulance of the Royal Army Medical Corps when he was killed in action six months earlier on 21st March 1918.
Lance-Corporal Samuel Lilley is buried in Noyelles-Sur-L'escaut Communal Cemetery Extension in France.
Lance-Corporal Samuel Lilley and his brother are also commemorated on the family headstone in Knockbreda Cemetery in Belfast.
