The 1911 census lists Matthew as age 16, working as a servant for the Semple family at house 11 in Ballyboley, Ballycor, County Antrim.
Matthew Boyd emigrated to Canada.
Prior to enlisting, he was working as a labourer.
Matthew Boyd enlisted on 23rd July 1915 in Toronto. He gave his next of kin as his mother, Caroline Nicholl Boyd, who was living at Taylorstown, Grange Corner, Toome.
Private Boyd sailed for England in October 1915.
On 21st Jan 1916, he was admitted to hospital with gonorrhoea. He was in Barnwell Hospital with gonorrhoea until he was healed and returned to duty on 6th April 1916.
On 10th October 1916 he contracted gonorrhoea again, moved to Cherry Minton Military Hospital, Cambridge, returned to duty 16th November 1916.
Private Boyd went to the front in France in February 1917.
Private Matthew Boyd was serving with the 5th Canadian Light Trench Mortar Battery in France when he died of wounds on 7th November 1917 at 10 Casualty Clearing Station. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
The Canadian Circumstances of Death Register records that Private Boyd died of wounds at No 10 Casualty Clearing Station on 7th November 1917.
Private Boyd is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
