The 1911 census lists Alexander as age 21 living with the family at house 78 in Spamount Street, Belfast. His father had died. Alexander was a Ship Yard Labourer. Private Alexander Hutchison was serving with the 109th Company of the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) when he was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme on Saturday 1st July 1916.

Last Will and Testament of Private Alexander Hutchison
I, Herbert Hutchison of 225 Spamount Street, Belfast in the county of the city of Belfast do solemnly and sincerely declare as follows: (1) That on the 12th day of September 1915, I was present when my brother Private A Hutchison, 109th Brigade, Machine Gun Corps, now deceased, had a conversation with my mother. (2) That I heard my brother say to my mother ‘I have made a will leaving everything to you in the event of my death.’ (3) On several other occasions my brother had informed me that he had made a will leaving all to my mother. (4) There were no other persons present on any of the occasions hereinbefore mentioned. I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing same to be true by virtue of the provisions of the Statutory Declarations Act 1835. Herbert Hutchinson. Signed and declared before me this 5th day of December 1916. Witnessed by Samuel Cochrane, Clergyman and Sinclair Hawkins of Belfast
Private Hutchison has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
