Fred Ewing was the son of James and Sarah Ewing. Fred was born in Moruya, New South Wales, Australia about 1890. Moruya lies of Canberra, on the Australian coast. Fred Ewing enlisted on 4th February 1915. He gave his next of kin as his mother Sarah Ewing, who was living at Richmond River, New South Wales. He was working as a labourer. After training Private Ewing left with the 17th Infantry Battalion from Sydney on 12th May 1915. Private Fred Ewing was serving with the 17th Battalion of the Australian Infantry when he incurred a bullet wound to the head at Gallipoli and taken to 5th Field Ambulance, Rest Gully. Private Fred Ewing died of his wounds at 9:20am on 11th November 1915. He was 25 years old.

Private Fred Ewing died of his wounds at 9:20am on 11th November 1915. He was 25 years old.
Private Frederick Ewing is buried in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey.
Information available suggests that Fred Ewing was originally from Killyberry, Bellaghy. However, in his attestation papers, he states he was born in New South Wales. In the two census returns of 1901 and 1911, the only Ewings in Killyberry were James and Mary Ewing.
The CWGC record Private Frederick Ewing as the son of James and Sarah Ewing of Goolmangar, New South Wales. It also states he was a native of Moruya, New South Wales.
