William Flynn was the son of William and Sarah Flynn. He was born and raised in Laurencetown, County Down. He was born about 1895. William’s mother Sarah died when he was very young. He was raised by his aunt. Prior to enlisting William was employed in the Lisnafillan Works. His father was a manager of Lisnafillan Bleaching Works. William Flynn was a member of the U.V.F. William enlisted in Ballymena. He was the first man to enlist from the Galgorm Company. Rifleman William George Flynn was serving with the 12th Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles when he was killed in action on Saturday 11th August 1917.
Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.
