Summary      
William J Mawhinnie was the son of William John and Eliza McWhinney. William was born about 1887 in Ballynafie, a townland just south east of Portglenone on the Antrim side of the river. William Mawhinnie enlisted in Scotland. Private William Mawhinnie was serving with the 1st Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers when he was killed in action on Wednesday 29th September 1915. Newspaper reports confirm that his wife and family resided in Scotland

Summary      
Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.
