Summary      
Albert Edward Murphy was the youngest son of James and Martha Jane Murphy. He was born in Kilrea on 8th March 1897. He was one of 11 children. The family lived in Kilrea and then Knockintern. His father was a gardener and domestic servant. Lance Corporal Albert Murphy was serving with the 10th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme on Saturday 1st July 1916. He was 19 years old. The last report of Lance Corporal Murphy was that he was seen lying wounded in the centre of the 3rd line of trenches near Albert.

The Thiepval Memorial will be found on the D73, next to the village of Thiepval, off the main Bapaume to Albert road (D929). Each year a major ceremony is held at the memorial on 1 July.
