William Given was the son of James and Esther Given. William Given was born in the district of Magherafelt on 25th April 1890. They were a family of farmers. However, William worked as a chemist’s apprentice in Carrickfergus before emigrating to Wellington, New Zealand in 1914. He worked as a pharmaceutical chemist for H J S Rickard, Willis Street, Wellington, prior to enlisting. On 4th October 1917, he was reported as having been wounded in action. William was afterwards confirmed as having been killed in action in France on that day.

The Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing forms the north-eastern boundary of Tyne Cot Cemetery, which is located 9 kilometres north east of Ieper town centre, on the Tynecotstraat, a road leading from the Zonnebeekseweg (N332). The names of those from United Kingdom units are inscribed on Panels arranged by Regiment under their respective Ranks. The names of those from New Zealand units are inscribed on panels within the New Zealand Memorial Apse located at the centre of the Memorial.
