Summary
John Fry was the son of Robert and Sarah Fry. John Fry was born on 4th August 1896 in Belfast. Sarah was a seamstress. Robert was a linen lapper. The family moved to Upperlands, where they worked in Clark’s Linen Mill. John was an apprentice Linen Lapper. The family then emigrated to Canada. They were living in Kenaston, Saskatchewan. John travelled to England to enlist early in the war. Private John Fry was serving with the 11th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment, when he was wounded. Private John Fry died at Toxteth Military Hospital, Liverpool on 18th November 1916 of wounds received in action. He was 20 years old.
This cemetery, belonging to the Corporation, is in the centre of the city. It was opened in 1856. There are 227 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war and 45 of the 1939-1945 war commemorated here. There is a War plot, with 69 burials, in which the names of the dead are recorded on a Screen Wall curb, and the remainder are scattered throughout the cemetery.
