Summary
Leslie Ellis Mann was the son of Henry and Margaret Mann. He was born on 27th December 1887 in Drumlamph, Magherafelt. He was one of 11 known children. The family lived in Drumlamph, Castledawson. Henry Mann was a Poor Rate Collector, Insurance agent and Farmer. Leslie emigrated to Australia about 1915. Prior to enlistment, he worked as a farmer. He gave his address as c/o Rev H P Thomas, The Vicarage, Port Macquarie, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17th April 1916 in Cootamundra, New South Wales. Private Leslie Mann was serving with the 1st Battalion of the Australian Infantry when he was killed in action in Belgium on 3rd October 1917. He was 29 years old.
Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.
