Arthur Donnelly was the son of Arthur Donnelly. He was born in Cloughmills, County Antrim. Arthur was 6' tall and had brown hair and blue eyes. He was a regular soldier who had joined the Scots Guards on 2nd March 1906. Arthur was transferred to the reserve in 1909. Arthur Donnelly enlisted in Middlesbrough. He was then recalled to the colours on the 6th August 1914. He was living in Magherafelt. Guardsman Arthur Donnelly was serving with the 1st Battalion of the Scots Guards when he was killed in action at Gheluvelt near Ypres, Belgium on the 26th October 1914. He was 36 years old.
Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.
