James Kane was a son of William and Elizabeth Kane. James Kane was born on 15th September 1889 in Megargy, Magherafelt. The family had a farm in Megargy, Ballymoghan, County Londonderry. James Kane emigrated to Toronto, Canada. Prior to enlisting he was living at 87 Riverdale Avenue, Toronto. He was a postman with the Canadian General Post Office. James Kane enlisted in Toronto on 27th March 1916. Private Kane was serving with the 4th Battalion of the Canadian Infantry when he was wounded in France and Flanders. Private James Kane died of his wounds a few days later on 4th May 1917.
Barlin is a village about 11 Kms south-west of Bethune on the D188, between the Bethune-Arras and Bethune-St. Pol roads, about 6.5 Kms south-east of Bruay. The Communal Cemetery and Extension lie to the north of the village on the D171 road to Houchin.
