Summary      
William Given was the son of James and Esther Given. William Given was born in the district of Magherafelt on 25th April 1890. They were a family of farmers. However, William worked as a chemist’s apprentice in Carrickfergus before emigrating to Wellington, New Zealand in 1914. He worked as a pharmaceutical chemist for H J S Rickard, Willis Street, Wellington, prior to enlisting. On 4th October 1917, he was reported as having been wounded in action. William was afterwards confirmed as having been killed in action in France on that day.

William Given was the son of James and Esther Given. James Given married Esther Dale in Cookstown on 1st May 1885.
William Given was born in the district of Magherafelt on 25th April 1890.
The 1901 census lists William as age 10 living with the family at house 42 in Ballymulderg Beg, Ballyronan, County Londonderry. James Given was a farmer.
The 1911 census does not list William as living with the family at house 32 in Ballymulderg Beg ,Ballyronan, County Londonderry. Hey remained a farming family.
The 1911 census lists William as age 20, boarding at house 8.1 in Castle Street, Carrickfergus, County Antrim. William was working as a chemist’s apprentice.
William Given emigrated to New Zealand about December 1914.
William Given lived at 231 The Terrace, Wellington. He worked as a pharmaceutical chemist for H J S Rickard, 3 Willis Street, Wellington, prior to enlisting.
William enlisted in Wellington on the 29th December 1916 in Wellington. Private William Given gave his next of kin as his father.
Private William Given left Wellington on 5th Apr 1917 with the 24th Reinforcements, Wellington Infantry Regiment, B Company (part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force), bound for Devonport, England. They arrived on 10th June 1917.
Private William Given’s unit left for France on 6th July, arriving at camp at Etaples on the 9th July.
On 28th July he joined the battalion and was posted to 11th Company.
On 4th October he was reported as having been wounded in action.
Three weeks later, on 3rd November 1917, he was reported wounded and missing.
Private William Given, serving with the 3rd Battalion of the Wellington Regiment, who was initially reported wounded and missing on 4th October 1917, was presumed to have been killed in action on that day.
A court of enquiry which took place in Rouen, France on 28th January 1918 found it was reasonable to assume that Private William Given had been killed in action.
Private William Given has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
