James Donnelly was the son of Francis and Margaret Donnelly. Francis Donnelly married Margaret McCorry on 27th September 1885 in the parish of Magherafelt.
James Donnelly was born in Magherafelt on 3rd June 1895.
The 1901 census lists James as age 5 living with the family at house 5 in Killyfaddy, Ballymoghan, County Londonderry. Ballymoghan is near Magherafelt. His father was a thatcher.

James enlisted in Galway, No 4769, with the Connaught Rangers.
Private James Donnelly was serving with the 7th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers when he was killed in action on 9th September 1916. He was 20 years old.
Private J Donnelly has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
